Thriving Design Collective Using the Web and Social Media to Bypass Traditional Retail & Wholesale Channels

New York City, NY (PRWeb) February 14, 2007 -- Trunkt, a collective of art and design entrepreneurs, is using the power of the web to bypass traditional retail and wholesale channels including trade shows and department store buyers.

In February, Trunkt launched an online LOOKBOOK at trunkt.org showcasing the work of over 150 member entrepreneurs. Using elements of social-networking sites, the website helps retail buyers, journalists and design-savvy shoppers discover and connect with fresh talent and innovative design products. For designers and retail buyers, the LOOKBOOK is an attractive and an extremely affordable alternative to tradeshows because it eliminates expensive travel, geographic limitations and is always available.

"We're making it easy and affordable for art and design entrepreneurs to connect with wholesale customers and design-lovers." says Trunkt founder Ayesha Ahmad. "There is so much amazing talent in the marketplace that gets ignored in the old way of doing business in retail and design. It's criminal."

Also in February, Trunkt launched a redesigned e-commerce site at trunkt.com that sells products from select members directly to consumers bypassing department stores as the only distribution channel for design entrepreneurs.

Trunkt's new websites are harnessing the power of the web to champion independent art and design entrepreneurs to retail and wholesale customers. The websites are diminishing the stranglehold tradeshows and department store buyers have on the design marketplace.

Trunkt is a major force in the recent popularity of independent design as an alternative to big-box retail and mass-marketed design. It has been on the forefront of using the scale and power of the web to mobilize talented design entrepreneurs and challenge the sea-of-sameness in mass retail and design.

About Trunkt

Trunkt is a collective of art and design entrepreneurs working in diverse categories including fashion, art, home, children's products, specialty food, specialty publishing and wellness.

The Trunkt collective began as a series of trunk shows in New York City featuring independent designers. The success of those shows led to the creation of a permanent gallery in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City and a beautiful e-commerce website at www.trunkt.com in 2006.

Trunkt was founded in December 2004 by Ayesha Ahmad, a home accents designer and former equity analyst at major investment banks, and Dev Tandon, a brand strategist and President of marketing consultancy Tangerine Tribe. Both received their MBAs at NYU where the Trunkt business plan was a finalist in the 2004 business plan competition.
